How to Make Safety Training Software

Safety training software allows you to handle the organizational tasks associated with safety training, including providing access to modules on demand, tracking progress toward completion and ensuring skills, knowledge and concept mastery. By providing safety training to your employees, you ensure compliance with training requirements, such as Occupational Safety and Health Administration guidelines. Creating safety training software involves using an authoring tool such as Adobe Captivate (the American Society for Training and Documentation website lists many resources) to assemble audio, video and other multimedia into lessons providing instruction on topics designed to prevent accidents and injuries.

  1. Determine if your work site problem can be solved by safety training. Conduct small group interviews with managers and employees to assess the problem. Training on software procedures and refresher training regarding infrequently used processes work well as safety training software offerings.
  2. Step 2

    Identify goals and objectives for your safety training program. Create a content outline and verify your instructional strategy with subject matter experts.

    Develop your lessons. For example, using Microsoft PowerPoint, you can create instructional lessons containing text, graphics and audio narration.     Add quiz questions to your instructional material by inserting graded question slides such as multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, short-answer, and matching and sequencing exercises that allow students to test their knowledge on what they have learned.

    Provide a certificate of completion so that students can prove they took the course.

    Target usage of your training software to high-risk groups. For example, younger employees, those new to their jobs and those handling hazardous substances tend to have more safety-issue incidents.

  8. Step 8

    Determine the effectiveness of your safety training by monitoring on-the-job accidents and injuries. Ideally, your awareness training will lead to a reduction in these occurrences. If not, revise your training program based on feedback from employees and supervisors as well as industry experts. Leverage supplementary training software, such as simulations, from other institutions, such as local universities, if possible. For example, Canada’s Worker and Safety Insurance Board provides very graphic commercials at their Prevent-it website.
